Early Life

Caitlin Clark was born in Des Moines, Iowa, to Brent, a vice president at a product company, and Anne (née Nizzi), whose father was a football coach and school administrator at Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines. Growing up in the area, Clark began playing basketball at the age of five, often competing in boys’ recreational leagues due to a lack of available girls’ leagues for her age.

In addition to basketball, she played softball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, and golf as a child before concentrating on basketball. At 13, she started playing in girls’ leagues several years above her age group. In sixth grade, she joined All Iowa Attack, an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball program based in Ames, Iowa, where she played until high school graduation. Under the coaching of Dickson Jensen, her AAU teammates included future WNBA player Ashley Joens. Clark found inspiration in Maya Moore of the Minnesota Lynx, the closest WNBA team to her hometown, and frequently attended their games with her father. She also admired All Iowa Attack alumnus Harrison Barnes and became a fan of the North Carolina Tar Heels after Barnes joined the program.
