Early Life and Education

Bryan Cranston was born in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on March 7, 1956, as the second of three children to Annalisa “Peggy” Sell, a radio actress, and Joseph Cranston, an actor and former amateur boxer. His father was of half Irish, quarter Austrian Jewish, and quarter German descent, while his mother was the daughter of German immigrants. He has an older brother, Kyle, and a younger sister, Amy. Cranston’s family moved to Canoga Park, Los Angeles, where his father held various jobs before pursuing acting, ultimately leaving the family when Bryan was 11. They reconnected later when Bryan and Kyle sought him out as adults. Cranston later starred in a film directed by his father.

Cranston has stated that he modeled his portrayal of Walter White on his father, noting his slumped posture. After his father left, he was partly raised by his maternal grandparents on their poultry farm in Yucaipa, California. He described his parents as “broken people” and reflected on the difficulties the family faced, including losing their home to foreclosure.
