Early life and education

Springsteen was born on September 23, 1949, at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, New Jersey, to Douglas Frederick “Dutch” Springsteen (1924-1998) and his wife, Adele Ann (née Zerilli; 1925-2024). Springsteen’s father worked as a bus driver, among other professions. His father had mental health concerns all his life, which exacerbated in his later years. His mother, who hailed from Brooklyn’s Bay Ridge neighborhood, worked as a legal secretary and was the family’s primary source of income. He is of Dutch, Irish, and Italian ancestry and was raised Catholic in Freehold, New Jersey.

Springsteen’s paternal grandparents were among the first Dutch families to settle in colonial-era America, which was then part of the Dutch Republic and known as New Netherland. Springsteen’s paternal ancestor, John Springsteen, was a patriot in the American Revolution, serving in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. The Springsteen surname comes from Groningen, a province in the Netherlands, and is topographic, translating to “jump stone” and meaning a stepping stone used on unpaved streets or between two dwellings.
