Born in Washington, D.C., Hume is the son of George Graham Hume and Virginia Powell (née Minnigerode). Through his father, Hume has Scottish ancestry, tracing back to George Home (1698–1760), a son of the 10th Baron of Wedderburn, who was exiled to Virginia following the First Jacobite Rebellion. Hume attended St. Albans School in Washington, D.C., alongside Al Gore, and went on to graduate from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.
