Paralympic Games Classes
At the Paralympic Games, archers compete in two main classes:
- W1: Designed for athletes who use wheelchairs and have reduced muscle strength, coordination, or range of motion in their arms. Competitors in this class use bows with a maximum draw weight of 45 pounds and no magnifying sights.
- Open: This category includes archers who can compete either while seated in a wheelchair, standing, or leaning on a stool. Athletes may have significant limitations in trunk and limb movement but retain normal arm function or face balance challenges.
Competitions consist of a ranking round where archers shoot 72 arrows (12 “ends” of six arrows each) at distances of 50m or 70m, with four minutes allowed for each set of six arrows. Following the ranking round, athletes advance to head-to-head elimination rounds, where they shoot three arrows per end over five ends.
