Early life
Gymnastics was Newman’s first sport, which she had to give up at the age of 13 due to a lower back vertebral injury. She thought about ice hockey and diving after taking a year break from athletics, but ultimately decided on track and field. A coach suggested vaulting because of her training in gymnastics. In London, Ontario, she went to Mother Teresa Secondary School.
NCAA career
When Newman transferred to Eastern Michigan University in 2013, the team won the Mid-American Conference and Newman went to the NCAA tournament. Following her coach Jerel Langley, she then transferred to the University of Miami. In 2016, Newman earned a degree in exercise physiology with a minor in nutrition. In the women’s pole vault, Newman broke the records for the University of Miami, the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), and Canada when she vaulted 4.60 m (15 feet 1 inch) on April 9, 2016, at the University of Miami’s Hurricane Alumni Invitational. Six times an NCAA Division I All-American, Newman concluded her collegiate career in June after winning the silver medal in the 2016 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Athletic career
At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Newman participated in the pole vault competition and took home the bronze medal. At the time, Newman’s 4.60 m (15 ft 1 in) vault placed her fourth in the world for women’s pole vault. She received her official Olympic team designation in July of 2016. Newman didn’t make it to the finals of the Olympics after barely vaulting 4.45 meters (14 feet 7 inches) in qualification. In her hometown of London, Ontario, Newman participated in the inaugural “Vault the Park” street vaulting competition during the annual Rib Fest. She successfully cleared 4.61 m (15 ft 1+1⁄4 in), breaking her personal Canadian women’s record.
At the Hurricane Alumni Invitational at the University of Miami on April 8, 2017, Newman broke her own national record once more with a vault of 4.71 m (15 feet 5+1⁄4 in) in Coral Gables, Florida.She vaulted 4.65 meters (15 feet 3 inches) to finish seventh in the August 2017 World Championships in Athletics, where she was a finalist. championships featuring a 4.70-meter height. Personal life
At the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, in October 2019, Newman got into a fight with her boyfriend, linebacker Anthony Chickillo of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Chickillo was given citations for harassment and criminal mischief, while Newman was charged with simple assault. The charges against both were eventually dropped. In 2021, Newman was included in Maxim’s list of the hot 100 women.
