Early Life

Al Green was born on April 13, 1946, in Forrest City, Arkansas, as the sixth of ten children to Cora Lee and Robert G. Greene Jr., a sharecropper. At around the age of ten, Green began performing with his sister in a group called the Greene Brothers. In the late 1950s, the Greene family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan. As a teenager, Green was kicked out of his family home after his deeply religious father found him listening to Jackie Wilson’s music. He then lived with a prostitute, became involved in hustling, and experimented with recreational drugs.

While in high school, Green formed a vocal group called Al Greene & the Creations. Two members of the group, Curtis Rodgers and Palmer James, later started an independent label called Hot Line Music Journal. In 1966, the group, now renamed Al Greene & the Soul Mates, recorded “Back Up Train,” which became a hit on the R&B charts, reaching No. 46 on the Cashbox Top 100.
