Nolte noted that during filming, he weighed around 160 pounds while portraying the younger version of the character, and later, when playing the middle-aged Tom, his weight had increased to over 180 pounds.

Nick Nolte was born on February 8, 1941, in Omaha, Nebraska. His father, Franklin Arthur Nolte (1904–1978), was the son of a farmer who ran away from home, nearly dropped out of high school, and earned three football letters at Iowa State University between 1929 and 1931. His mother, Helen (née King; 1914–2000), worked as a department store buyer before becoming an antique dealer and co-owning an antique shop. Nolte’s father was of German descent, while his mother came mostly from Scottish ancestry. His maternal grandfather, Matthew Leander King, invented the hollow-tile silo and was a pioneer in early aviation.
Nolte attended Kingsley Elementary School in Waterloo, Iowa, and later went to Westside High School in Omaha, where he played as the football team’s kicker. He also attended Benson High School but was expelled for hiding beer before practice and being caught drinking during the session. After graduating high school in 1959, Nolte studied at several colleges: Pasadena City College in Southern California, Arizona State University in Tempe (where he had a football scholarship), Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher, and Phoenix College.
