Hailing from Exeter, Devon, Ampadu is the son of former professional footballer Kwame Ampadu. A standout in Exeter City’s youth system, he featured for the under-18s at just 14. On 9 August 2016, he made his senior debut in an EFL Cup match against Brentford, playing the full 120 minutes in a 1–0 win. At 15 years, 10 months, and 26 days, he became the club’s youngest-ever player, surpassing a record set 87 years prior by Cliff Bastin. His performance earned him Man of the Match honors. He made his League Two debut just a week later in a loss to Crawley Town.
Ampadu signed with Chelsea on 1 July 2017, with the clubs negotiating a compensation fee due to his age. Disagreements over his valuation led to the case being referred to a tribunal. He made his Chelsea debut on 20 September 2017 in an EFL Cup match against Nottingham Forest, becoming the first player born in the 2000s to feature for the senior team.
