During his single season with the club, he played in 31 league matches and scored twice. After another strong campaign, Melo transferred to Grêmio. At Grêmio, he featured in 19 matches and scored three goals during the 2004 season.

However, following the club’s relegation that year and the subsequent dismantling of the squad, Melo’s time in Porto Alegre came to an end. In January 2005, Felipe Melo made his first move abroad, signing with Spanish La Liga side Mallorca. The club released Andrija Delibašić to make room for his arrival. Melo made eight appearances before suffering a knee ligament injury in a match against Valencia in March, which prematurely ended his season. Mallorca narrowly avoided relegation that year.
