Early Life
Butler, a descendant of children’s rights activist Edna Gladney, grew up in Duncanville, Texas, where he attended Duncanville High School. He was a two-time captain of the Duncanville Panthers football team and earned MVP honors during his senior season.
College Career
Butler attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. After redshirting his freshman year, he became an integral part of the Vanderbilt Commodores’ defense. Over the course of his four-year college career, Butler accumulated 113 total tackles, 10 sacks, two blocked extra points, and one defensive touchdown.
Professional career
Butler signed with the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent on May 5, 2017. After impressing during the team’s training camp and preseason, he secured a spot on the Patriots’ 53-man roster. He made his debut in the Patriots’ regular season home opener, playing 21 snaps and recording a tackle in a 42–27 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Patriots reached Super Bowl LII but were defeated by the Philadelphia Eagles 41–33, with Butler recording one tackle in the game. The following season, the Patriots returned to the Super Bowl, where they triumphed 13–3 over the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII.
In Week 2 of the 2019 season, Butler recorded two sacks in a dominant 43–0 win over the Miami Dolphins. In Week 8 against the Cleveland Browns, he recorded a team-high two sacks on quarterback Baker Mayfield in the 27–13 victory. On April 17, 2020, Butler re-signed with the Patriots on a one-year restricted free agent contract.
