Amateur Career

In his amateur days, Beterbiev competed in both the light-heavyweight and heavyweight divisions. He won the 2006 European Amateur Boxing Championships, defeating notable boxers such as Kenneth Egan and Ismail Sillakh. Although he defeated Egor Mekhontsev, he lost to two-time world champion Evgeny Makarenko in 2006. In 2007, he triumphed over future unified light-heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev in the semi-finals and went on to beat Makarenko again in the finals to qualify for the World Championships, where he faced Abbos Atoev but suffered an upset loss.

During the 2008 Olympics, Beterbiev secured a victory against Kennedy Katende (15:3) but controversially lost in the round of 16 to local favorite Zhang Xiaoping, who eventually claimed the gold medal. At the 2009 World Championships, he defeated young Cuban Jose Larduet and Uzbek Elshod Rasulov to become the light heavyweight champion.
