Zhang is coached by Liu Shuo. Her parents are Zhang Zhiqiang, a former football player, and Wang Fengqin, a former basketball player. She also goes by the English name Rose. Career
Born in Tianjin, Zhang began playing tennis at six when her parents took her to a local tennis club. She turned professional in 2003 and made her singles debut in Mollerusa that August. After defeating Matilde Munoz-Gonzalves in the first qualifying round, she was eliminated by Laura Figuerola-Foix. By the end of 2004, after a full year on the ITF Women’s Circuit, she finished with a year-end ranking of 901st. Zhang found significant success in ITF tournaments, winning one $50k event, eight $25k events, and three $10k events between 2006 and 2009. However, as of October 2009, she had only secured two main-draw victories on the WTA Tour. She captured her first singles title at the 2013 Guangzhou Open as a wildcard entrant.
