Zachary John Quinto was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Margaret “Margo” (née McArdle), who worked at an investment firm and then at a magistrate’s office, and Joseph John “Joe” Quinto, a barber. He grew up in the Green Tree, Pennsylvania suburb and attended Saints Simon and Jude Catholic School (which closed in 2010). Quinto’s father died of cancer when he was seven years old, so his mother raised him and his brother, Joe. Quinto’s maternal great-grandfather was Peter J. McArdle, a labor activist and Republican Pittsburgh City Council member, after whom Pittsburgh’s P.J. McArdle Roadway is called. His maternal grandfather was Joseph A. McArdle, a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives. Quinto was reared Catholic.

His father was of Italian ethnicity, while his mother was of Irish heritage. Quinto graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1995, where he performed in musicals and earned the Gene Kelly Award for Best Supporting Actor. He then went on to Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama, where he graduated in 1999.
