Is Father’s Day on the same date every year?

Father’s Day is observed yearly on the third Sunday of June, unlike holidays such as Christmas or July 4th, which consistently fall on the same date each year. In 2024, Father’s Day will be on Sunday, June 16th, and in 2023 it was celebrated on June 18th. Next year, Father’s Day is set to occur a little earlier than usual, on Sunday, June 15th, 2025.

Why do we celebrate Father’s Day?

The concept of a day honoring fathers can be traced back to the early 1900s when Sonora Smart Dodd, whose mother passed away during childbirth, was raised by her father, a Civil War veteran named William Smart. In 1910, Dodd proposed a day to recognize fathers in a similar way to how mothers are honored. The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19 of that year, chosen by Dodd to coincide with her father’s birthday month.

The history of Father’s Day

Dodd initiated the inaugural Father’s Day over one hundred years ago, but it took decades for it to be recognized as an official holiday. Despite this, the observance gained popularity rapidly, with Father’s Day being celebrated nationwide in the United States and adopting the rose as its symbol. Wearing a colored rose indicated a father who was alive, while a white rose signified a deceased father. Throughout the years, several presidents such as Calvin Coolidge and Lyndon B. Johnson acknowledged the occasion, yet it was not until President Richard Nixon issued a proclamation in 1972 that Father’s Day was established as an official holiday on the national calendar.

The Struggle To Make Father’s Day A Holiday

Dodd presented her proposal for an annual Father’s Day observance to the Spokane Ministerial Association and the local YMCA on June 6, 1910, receiving strong support. The inaugural Father’s Day celebration in Spokane took place on June 19, 1910, featuring heartfelt speeches by various pastors. Woodrow Wilson became the first U.S. President to mark the day in 1916, endorsing the idea and advocating for it to become a national holiday despite initial congressional concerns about overshadowing Mother’s Day and commercialization risks.

Undaunted, Dodd embarked on a journey to garner fathers’ support by speaking publicly, but faced harsh criticism. Fathers mocked her efforts, suggesting a national fishing day instead of Father’s Day. Despite President Calvin Coolidge’s encouragement for states to observe the day, he declined to issue an official proclamation. In the 1930s, there was a push to merge Mother’s Day and Father’s Day into a “Parent’s Day.” The “Father’s Day Council,” supported by men’s clothing retailers, failed to establish the holiday by 1938, only achieving recognition on calendars as the third Sunday in June. The public showed little interest in purchasing unnecessary gifts for fathers.
