At the close of the previous year, Nestlé had 83.5% of its plastic packaging worldwide designed for recycling. Additionally, 41.5% of Nestlé’s overall packaging now comprises recycled or renewable materials. The company currently incorporates 50% recycled polyethylene (rPE) in the shrink film used in its European facilities and aims to further increase the utilization of food-grade recycled polypropylene (rPP) and rPE in various brands such as Nesquik, KitKat, and Purina.

In the UK, it disclosed a £7m investment in a new recycling plant for processing flexible plastics, scheduled to launch in Durham later this year.

“The design and materials utilized in our packaging are elements that we can directly influence,” stated Antonia Wanner, who serves as Nestlé’s head of ESG strategy and deployment. “However, our commitment extends beyond this; we actively contribute to enhancing waste management infrastructure, advocating for standardized regulations, and championing the rights of waste workers.” Nestlé’s proactive approach towards sustainable packaging not only involves internal initiatives but also encompasses broader efforts to drive systemic change in the industry. This site utilizes Berry’s CleanStream technology, known as the first closed-loop system globally to mechanically convert domestically recovered household waste polypropylene (PP) into food-grade packaging.
  • The establishment, inaugurated in 2022, utilizes cutting-edge technologies such as AI and machine learning to accurately categorize incoming waste materials and avoid contamination.
  • Berry, with its film recycling facilities in Dumfries, Heanor, Rhymney (UK), and Steinfeld (Germany), is now among the leading plastics recyclers in Europe, capable of processing approximately 200,000 tonnes of material each year.


During the discussion with Berry and Nestlé’s team, it was evident that while packaging and recycling are important, achieving a sustainable future involves more than just dealing with plastic. For Nestlé, packaging contributes to only 10-12% of its total emissions. Jodie Roussell, Nestlé’s global public affairs lead for packaging & sustainability, emphasized the need to consider both ingredients and packaging, referring to it as a “dual challenge” that requires proportional attention. She highlighted the necessity of introducing new regulations to enable the adoption of alternative systems, in conjunction with government initiatives to decarbonize sectors like transportation.

She highlighted that decarbonizing power, heat, and water sterilization is part of a larger transition in various industrial technologies. Meanwhile, Mike Baxter from Berry emphasized the importance of not oversimplifying packaging. Plastic, despite being often demonized, plays a crucial role in preserving food. Berry’s Leamington Spa plant recycles polypropylene, a commonly used plastic for both food and non-food purposes. It is a versatile option for packaging and food service, providing brands with an economical and safe choice. S&P Trucost states that polypropylene has the smallest carbon footprint compared to alternative materials.
