While studying a Bachelor of Commerce degree, Iyer made his Twenty20 debut at Holkar Stadium against the Railways cricket team in March 2015 and his List A debut at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in December of the same year. He made the decision to drop out and participate in a Master of Business Administration programme in finance after clearing the CA Intermediate exams in order to continue his cricket career. On December 6, 2018, he made his Madhya Pradesh first-class debut in the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy. With 155 runs at an average of 51.66, Iyer concluded as Madhya Pradesh’s leading scorer in the 2021–22 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He maintained his form, hitting 379 runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for 2021–2022.
Ahead of the 2021 Indian Premier League, Iyer was acquired by the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL auction in February 2021. When the IPL resumed in the United Arab Emirates on September 20, 2021, he played his first IPL game against Royal Challengers Bangalore. He hit his first IPL fifty against the Mumbai Indians on September 23, 2021.
