He played college football at Florida Atlantic University and was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Hendrickson played college football at Florida Atlantic University from 2013 to 2016. Coming out of Florida Atlantic, Hendrickson was widely projected by NFL scouts and analysts as a third- or fourth-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

On January 21, 2017, he participated in the East-West Shrine Game, where he recorded a strip sack and was named the Defensive Player of the Game, although his team, the East, lost to the West 10–3. Hendrickson also received an invitation to the NFL Scouting Combine, where he completed most of the required drills, though he opted out of the bench press. His 40-yard dash time of 4.65 seconds was among the top seven for defensive linemen. On March 30, 2017, Hendrickson showcased his skills at Florida Atlantic’s pro day, where he completed 18 bench press reps and participated in positional drills. A total of 27 NFL teams sent scouts and team representatives to evaluate Hendrickson and other prospects. NFLDraftScout.com ranked him as the 13th best defensive end prospect in the draft.
