Junior career
Tommy Paul was consistently one of the top juniors in his class. On December 9, 2015, Paul reached his career high ITF junior rank of No. 3. Paul made two junior Grand Slam finals in 2015. He won the boys’ singles title at the 2015 French Open after defeating fellow American Taylor Fritz in three sets. Professional career
Paul got professional in 2015. Paul, unlike most Americans, prefers clay courts, having won the Junior French Open and his first five ITF Futures singles titles there. He made his maiden major main draw appearance at the 2015 US Open, but was eliminated in the first round by Andreas Seppi. Paul made his maiden appearance in the top 200 in March 2016, when he qualified for the Miami Masters. In April, Paul received a wildcard into the 2016 U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships in Houston, where he defeated 53rd-ranked Paolo Lorenzi in the first round for his maiden ATP level victory.
Paul would then mostly compete on the ATP Challenger Tour and the ITF Circuit. He continued to compete in Challengers and ITFs during the first half of 2017. After qualifying in the Atlanta Open in July 2017, he overcame seventh seed and 53rd-ranked Chung Hyeon in three sets. He then defeated Malek Jaziri in three sets, advancing to his first ATP Tour quarterfinal. Then he was defeated by Gilles Müller, the third seed. Tommy received a wildcard into the ATP 500 Washington Open as a result of his performance in Atlanta. Paul overcame Casper Ruud, advancing to the second round.
