Thomas Massie Biography: Thomas Harold Massie born January 13, 1971 is an American politician and engineer who has represented Kentucky’s 4th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2012. A member of the Republican Party, his district encompasses much of northeastern Kentucky, including parts of the Cincinnati area on the Kentucky side and the eastern suburbs of Louisville. Before his time in Congress, Massie served as the judge-executive of Lewis County, Kentucky, from 2011 to 2012.

Early Life, Education, and Business Career
Massie was born in Huntington, West Virginia, and raised in Vanceburg, Kentucky. He met his wife, Rhonda, while attending Lewis County High School in Vanceburg. His father worked as a beer distributor. Massie holds a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering and a Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). While at MIT, he was involved in the MIT Solar Car Club, which placed second in the Solar and Electric 500 at the Phoenix International Raceway in 1991. In 1992, Massie won MIT’s prestigious 2.70 Design Competition (now called 2.007), a contest in which he had aspired to compete in since watching it on television in seventh grade.
Professional Life
During his time at MIT, Massie earned recognition for his achievements. In 1995, he won the Lemelson MIT Student Prize, which came with a $30,000 award for inventors. He also won the $10,000 David and Lindsay Morgenthaler Grand Prize at the MIT $10K Entrepreneurial Business Plan Competition.
Massie has been actively involved in business since his early years. In 1993, while still in college, he co-founded SensAble Devices Inc. with his wife, Rhonda. As a student, he completed his bachelor’s thesis on the “Design of a Three-Degree of Freedom Force-Reflecting Haptic Interface” and his master’s thesis on “Initial Haptic Explorations with the Phantom: Virtual Touch Through Point Interaction” in 1996. In 2010, Massie entered politics, running for the position of Lewis County Judge-Executive in Kentucky. He won the election by a landslide, defeating his Democratic opponent by 40 points.
