Early Life and Education
Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone was born in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan, on July 6, 1946. He is the elder son of Jacqueline “Jackie” Stallone, a women’s professional wrestling promoter, and Francesco “Frank” Stallone Sr., a hairdresser. His mother had American roots with Breton French and Ukrainian Jewish ancestry, while his father was an Italian immigrant from Gioia del Colle who moved to the U.S. in the 1930s. Stallone’s younger brother is actor and musician Frank Stallone.
Many biographies state that Stallone’s birth name is “Michael Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone.” His mother initially named him “Tyrone” in admiration of actor Tyrone Power, but his father later changed it to “Sylvester.” As a child, he was nicknamed “Binky,” but opted for “Mike” after schoolmates called him “Stinky.” His middle name, “Gardenzio,” is a variation of the Italian name “Gaudenzio,” which he often shortened to “Enzio.”
