Shreya Ghoshal was born on March 12, 1984, in Berhampore, Murshidabad, West Bengal, into a Bengali Brahmin family. She spent her childhood in Rawatbhata, a small town near Kota, Rajasthan. Her father, Bishwajit Ghoshal, is an electrical engineer with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India, while her mother, Sarmistha Ghoshal, holds a postgraduate degree in literature. Ghoshal began her music journey at the age of four and has a younger brother, Soumyadeep Ghoshal, who is also a musician.
She completed her early education up to the eighth grade at Atomic Energy Central School No. 4 in Rawatbhata. In 1995, Ghoshal won the All India Light Vocal Music Competition in New Delhi, organized by the Sangam Kala Group, in the sub-junior category. In 1997, after her father was transferred to the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, her family moved to Mumbai, where she attended Atomic Energy Central School in Anushakti Nagar. She initially enrolled in Atomic Energy Junior College to study science but later dropped out to pursue arts at SIES College of Arts, Science, and Commerce in Mumbai, majoring in English.
