Early Life
Samuel Frederick Smith was born on May 19, 1992, in London, to Frederick Smith and broker Kate Cassidy. They grew up in Great Chishill and attended Thomas More Primary School. As a child, Smith faced bullying due to their body shape and underwent liposuction at the age of 12. Smith’s musical journey began early, as they joined Youth Music Theatre UK and performed in the 2007 production of Oh! Carol, a musical featuring Neil Sedaka’s songs. Before diving into musical theatre, Smith had experience performing in jazz bands. They studied singing and songwriting under jazz pianist Joanna Eden for several years.
While attending St Mary’s Catholic School in Bishop’s Stortford, Smith was also involved in the Bishop’s Stortford Junior Operatics (now Bishop’s Stortford Musical Theatre Society) and the Cantate Youth Choir. They regularly attended the Anglican St Mary the Virgin Church in Saffron Walden with their family. In 2008 and 2009, Smith released two singles: “Bad Day All Week” and “When It’s Alright.
