Williams joined Portsmouth in July 2010, signing a scholarship with the club’s academy team. There were initial delays regarding international clearance due to the Football Federation Australia (FFA) failing to release the necessary paperwork, but this was resolved by November 12. He made his debut for Portsmouth on August 6, 2010, in a friendly match against Farnborough. His first competitive match for the academy ended in a 4–1 defeat to Chelsea.
During the 2011–12 season, Williams was promoted to train with Steve Cotterill’s first team. His first appearance with the senior squad came in a 4–0 victory over Havant & Waterlooville, where he impressed with a lively performance and an assist. He also featured in a match against Chelsea and traveled to the United States with the first team.
