Born to a Japanese mother, Makiko, and a Beninese father, Zakari Jabil, Hachimura’s given name, “Rui”  which means “base” or “fortress” in Japanese, was chosen by his grandfather, a baseball fan. The character also refers to “base” in baseball terminology. Hachimura has three younger siblings—one brother, Allen, who plays basketball for the Gunma Crane Thunders in Japan’s B.League, and two sisters. In his early childhood, Hachimura played baseball as a catcher and pitcher.

In 2013, Hachimura led the Meisei High School basketball team to a victory in the All-Japan High School Tournament, scoring 32 points in a 92–78 win over Fukuoka University Ohori.
