Early Life
Gobert was born in Saint-Quentin, Aisne, in northern France. His father, Rudy Bourgarel, hails from Guadeloupe and played college basketball in the U.S. for the Marist Red Foxes from 1985 to 1988. He also played 19 games with the French national team and had a professional career in Paris and Saint-Quentin, where he met Gobert’s mother. After his parents divorced when he was about three years old, Gobert lived with his mother in Saint-Quentin and regularly visited his father in Guadeloupe.
Gobert began playing basketball in 2003 for the JSC St-Quentin club before moving on to the Saint-Quentin BB club. In 2007, he joined the cadet training center at Cholet Basket, and in 2010, he competed in the FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship with the French under-18 national team, finishing as the team’s top scorer and rebounder.
