In January 2025, during the third and final T20I match against Afghanistan in Bengaluru, a significant controversy unfolded when Rohit Sharma came back to bat in the second Super Over, despite having been retired out in the first Super Over. According to the rules of the Super Over, a batter who has been retired out is not permitted to return to the game. According to Karim Janat, the Afghan player who played in the match, Rohit should not have been allowed to bat again. Janat said,
“We didn’t know much about that. Our management talked to the umpires. Rohit came out to bat, but we learned later that he shouldn’t have been allowed to do that. Even if you were retired out, you can’t come to bat again.”

In March 2005, Sharma earned his List A debut for Western Zone in the Deodhar Trophy match at Gwalior against Centre Zone. With 24 balls remained playing at number eight, he hit 31 not out as West Zone triumphed by three wickets. In the same game, Ravindra Jadeja and Cheteshwar Pujara made their debuts. Sharma gained notoriety in the same occasion when he hit an unbeaten 142 in 123 balls versus North Region at the Maharanna Bhupal College Ground in Udaipur.
