Her father, Hassan Halilov Ibrahimoff, was a Pomak (a Bulgarian Muslim) born in Oraio, Greece, near the Bulgarian border. His family later relocated to Bulgaria, and he emigrated to the United States in 1949. Upon marrying Dorothea, he converted to Orthodox Christianity and adopted the name Allan Wilson in 1960, choosing the name from a street in their neighborhood.

The family settled in Los Angeles, where Allan worked as a bartender. Wilson was raised in the Greek Orthodox faith. Her father was a polyglot who could speak several languages, including Bulgarian, Russian, Turkish, Polish, Greek, and some Italian and French. Tom Hanks, her husband, has shared that he based his character Viktor Navorski in The Terminal on his multilingual father-in-law.
