Early life
Ayoade was born on May 23, 1977, in Hammersmith, London, as the son of a Norwegian mother and a Nigerian father. His family relocated to Ipswich when he was young.[8] At the age of 15, he became interested in film “beyond Star Wars and Back to the Future” and began studying the works of directors Woody Allen, Ingmar Bergman, and Federico Fellini. He attended the independent St Joseph’s College in Ipswich and recalls being “obsessed” with J.D. Salinger’s novel The Catcher in the Rye. He became so enthralled with the book that he began to dress like the protagonist, Holden Caulfield. From 1995 to 1998, Ayoade studied law at St Catharine’s College in Cambridge, where he received the Martin Steele Prize for play production.
He and Footlights vice-president John Oliver collaborated on several works, including Emotional Baggage (directed by Matthew Holness) and Between a Rock and a Hard Place (directed by Cal McCrystal), which toured in 1997 and 1998. Ayoade claims that his parents would not have approved of “Regency era” education, adding that “a non-vocational degree seemed such an outlandish indulgence”. He stated that his legal degree was no longer a feasible “fallback” for him, and that he would have to “start from scratch”.
