In the United Kingdom, he gained attention for his first main role as John Thornton in the British television series North and South (2004). His portrayal of dwarf king and commander Thorin Oakenshield in Peter Jackson’s film trilogy adaption of The Hobbit won him widespread acclaim. Notable roles include John Proctor in Yaël Farber’s stage production of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, Francis Dolarhyde in the American TV series Hannibal, Lucas North in the British TV drama Spooks, John Porter in the British TV drama Strike Back, Daniel Miller in the EPIX spy series Berlin Station, and Guy of Gisborne in the British TV drama Robin Hood. He played Trevor Belmont in the Netflix adaption of Castlevania. In 2020, he portrayed the lead in the Netflix miniseries The Stranger.

Early life and education
Armitage was born in Leicester, England, as the younger son of Margaret, a secretary, and John Armitage, an engineer. He has an older brother named Christopher. He attended Huncote Community Primary School in Huncote, Blaby District, Leicestershire, before starting senior school at Brockington College in Enderby. At Brockington, Armitage explored his musical interests by playing the cello in school and municipal orchestras and learning to play the flute. By the age of 14, he had acquired a grant from the Leicestershire Authority and persuaded his mother to let him transfer to Pattison College in Coventry, an independent boarding school specializing in the performing arts, where he could concentrate on theater and dance.
Armitage has expressed gratitude for the training and opportunities provided by Pattison College, stating, “It… instilled in me a discipline that has served me well – never be late, know your lines, and be professional.” By the time he ended school, he had A Levels in music and English, as well as performing experience in local amateur and professional shows like Showboat, Half a Sixpence, Orpheus and the Underworld (as Bacchus), and The Hobbit (as an elf) at Birmingham’s New Alexandra Theatre.
