Early Life
Reba McEntire was born in McAlester, Oklahoma, in 1955 but grew up on a ranch in Chockie, Oklahoma. She was the third of four children born to Clark (1927–2014) and Jacqueline McEntire (1926–2020). Her grandfather, John Wesley McEntire, was a world-champion steer roper in 1934, and her father earned the same title three times (1957, 1958, and 1961). While Jacqueline aspired to be a country singer, she instead became a public school teacher, librarian, and secretary. Though loving, her mother contrasted with her father, who had difficulty expressing affection. Reba reflected on this in her autobiography, noting her regret that her father never openly told them he loved them.
The McEntire family operated a cattle ranch in Chockie, where all family members participated in chores, including castrating bulls and administering worm medicine. Encouraged by their mother, the McEntire siblings developed a passion for singing. During car trips to rodeo events, Jacqueline taught them to sing in harmony. Young Reba began performing at school, starting in first grade with “Away in a Manger” at a Christmas pageant.
