In addition to her TV work, Jones appeared in films like I Love You, Man (2009), The Social Network (2010), Our Idiot Brother (2011), The Muppets (2011), Celeste and Jesse Forever (2012) — a film she co-wrote — and Tag (2018). She also co-wrote the story for Toy Story 4 (2019). Jones took on roles as a producer in Hot Girls Wanted (2015) and the series Hot Girls Wanted: Turned On (2017), where she directed the first episode. Both projects explore the sex industry.

Her father is African-American, and her mother is of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, with roots in Russia and Latvia. Rashida was raised in Reform Judaism and grew up in Bel Air, Los Angeles. Reflecting on her mixed-race heritage, Jones has said, “It was the 1970s and still not that acceptable for them to be together.” Jones made her professional acting debut in 1997 in The Last Don, a mini-series based on Mario Puzo’s novel.
