Early life

Peretz Bernstein was born on March 29, 1959, in Queens, New York City. He grew up in a Jewish family; his mother was an artist, and his father was a jeweler. When Farrell was three years old, his mother committed suicide, which he subsequently sang about in the Jane’s Addiction songs “Then She Did” and “Twisted Tales”. In an interview with The Guardian, Farrell discussed his mother’s suicide, saying, “I remember it, yeah.” Some things evoke significant feelings in me, but you can’t change them, so you move on. I believe it contributes significantly to my respect for life. He attended grade school in Woodmere, Long Island, before his family moved to Florida.

Farrell’s family relocated to North Miami Beach, Florida, when he was a youngster. At the age of seventeen, after graduating from high school, Farrell sought adventure and boarded a bus to California. Aside leaving some belongings, Farrell stole a surfboard, painting supplies, and some marijuana. He has indicated in subsequent interviews that he intended to focus on surfing, but had also begun to develop an interest in music at that stage in his life, citing inspirations such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Sly and the Family Stone, and James Brown.
