Oswalt was born on January 27, 1969, in Portsmouth, Virginia, to Carla and Larry J. Oswalt, a career United States Marine Corps officer. He was named after General George S. Patton and has a younger brother, Matt Oswalt, who is a comedy writer known for the YouTube web series Puddin’. Growing up as a military brat, he lived in Ohio and Tustin, California, before settling in Sterling, Virginia. Oswalt graduated from Broad Run High School in Ashburn, Virginia, in 1987 and went on to attend the College of William & Mary, where he majored in English and earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1991. He was also initiated into the Alpha Theta chapter of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. In May 2023, he was honored with a Doctor of Arts degree by William & Mary. In the 1990s, he lived in San Francisco, describing it as a cheap place for a young, aspiring comedian.
