As a child, he appeared in various television commercials and, in 1989, auditioned for The All New Mickey Mouse Club. Although he didn’t land a role, his true passion was music—a talent his mother supported by enrolling him in vocal lessons. Carter’s music career began to take shape in 1992 when he successfully auditioned to join what would become the Backstreet Boys. He had already crossed paths with future bandmates A.J. McLean and Howie Dorough during earlier auditions. Kevin Richardson and Brian Littrell later completed the group. Their debut single, “We’ve Got It Goin’ On,” was released in 1995, marking the start of their rise to fame. Outside of music, Nick has pursued other interests, including powerboat racing.

Carter was born in Jamestown, New York, to Jane Eleonora Schneck (née Spaulding, formerly Carter) and Robert Carter (who passed away in 2017). At the time, his parents ran a bar named the Yankee Rebel in Westfield, New York. He is of primarily North and West European descent. When he was four years old, the family relocated to Ruskin, Florida, near Tampa, where they managed a retirement home called the Garden Villa and expanded their family.
Nick is one of several siblings, including Leslie Carter (1986–2012), Aaron Carter (1987–2022), Angel Carter (born 1987), and Bobbie Jean Carter (1982–2023). In a 1999 interview with J-14 magazine, he reflected on growing up with a large family, noting that while his father, an only child, had to seek out friends, Nick always had someone around to play with and spend time.
