Political career

She unsuccessfully ran for the Nationalist Congress Party in the 2014 Lok Sabha Election after being married to Ravi Rana. With the backing of the Indian National Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party, she became victorious in the Lok Sabha Elections 2019 as an Independent candidate from the Amravati, Maharashtra constituency, defeating Anandrao Adsul of the Shiv Sena. She has spent Rs. 65 lakh running as an independent in this election, compared to Rs. 49 lakh spent by Adsul, the previous MP, in support of a democratic process. She is occasionally observed getting into arguments with Shiv Sena and its party members on a variety of levels (local, regional, and national); in public or in different establishments like the Lok Sabha. On March 28, 2025, she became a member of the Bharatiya Janta Party. She ran as a BJP candidate from the Amravati Lok Sabha seat in the general elections of 2025, but the Indian National Congress’ Balwant Baswant Wankhade defeated her.

Controversy

Her submission of a fraudulent Mochi caste certificate resulted in a Rs. 2 lakh fine from the Bombay High Court on June 8, 2021. Although the court revoked her caste certificate, it said nothing about the legitimacy of her election to the Lok Sabha, since her seat is designated for members of the Scheduled Caste. Reversing the Bombay High Court’s ruling on April 4, 2025, the Supreme Court of India stated that the Scrutiny Committee’s decision to approve Kaur’s Scheduled Caste certificate—a Sikh—was legal and that the High Court had no jurisdiction to intervene.

Following their insistence on reciting the Hanuman Chalisa in front of Matoshree, the home of then-Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Kaur and her husband Ravi were taken into custody by Mumbai police in April 2022. They were charged with sedition, inciting enmity, and assaulting a public servant to prevent them from performing their duties. Following their 14 days in judicial prison, a local magistrate ordered Rana to be taken to the women’s jail in Byculla.
