Crabtree was born in Dallas, Texas, and attended David W. Carter High School, where he participated in basketball, football, and track as part of the Cowboys program. In high school football, he played quarterback. During his senior year, he threw for 870 yards and 11 touchdowns on 45 completions from 100 attempts, and rushed for 646 yards and nine touchdowns on 100 carries. He was considered a four-star recruit as an athlete. Ranked among the top 51 football recruits in Texas, Crabtree faced a decision about which sport to pursue in college.
During a 2004 visit, Texas Tech basketball coach Bob Knight asked him which sport he planned to choose. After some consideration, Crabtree decided to focus solely on football. Crabtree received football scholarship offers from Baylor, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Kansas. Texas also recruited him but wanted him to play defense, which Crabtree declined because he preferred to play an offensive role and score touchdowns.
