Early Life
Lorenzo Patterson was born and raised in Compton, California, on June 16, 1969, growing up on Pannes Avenue near Kelly Park with his parents, two brothers, and a sister. His father was initially employed by the government before later opening his own barbershop. During his youth, Patterson joined the Kelly Park Compton Crips, a gang also associated with Eazy-E, but eventually left gang life in favor of drug dealing, which he saw as more profitable. However, after a police raid on the home of his close friend MC Chip, Ren gave up drug dealing to focus solely on music.
He attended Dominguez High School, where he met his future collaborator DJ Train. Around this time, he developed a passion for hip hop and began writing music with MC Chip. Together, they formed a group called Awesome Crew and performed at parties and local venues. Patterson’s rap career took off in 1985 when he partnered with childhood friend Eric “Eazy-E” Wright. Although he graduated from high school in 1987 with plans to enlist in the U.S. Army, he ultimately changed course after being influenced by the film Full Metal Jacket.
