Stafford was born in Tampa, Florida, to parents John and Margaret Stafford. He spent part of his childhood in Dunwoody, Georgia, while his father attended graduate school at the University of Georgia. Stafford has one sibling, an older sister named Page. The family later moved to Dallas, Texas, where Stafford attended Highland Park High School, where he played alongside future MLB pitcher Clayton Kershaw.
