Matheus Nunes Biography 2025
Born in Brazil, Nunes lived there until he was 12 before relocating to Ericeira, Lisbon District, with his mother and English stepfather. He started playing football with local club Ericeirense in the sixth division while also helping out at his godfather’s bakery. Nunes made his senior debut for Ericeirense during the 2015–16 season in the Lisbon Football Association. He had a brief trial with Oriental in 2017 but returned to Ericeirense due to a thigh injury. In the summer of 2018, Nunes joined Estoril and made his LigaPro debut on October 14 in a 2–2 draw against Varzim, although he was forced to leave the match due to injury. After his time at Estoril, he signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with Sporting CP on January 29, 2019, for a fee of €500,000 for half of his economic rights, along with a €45 million buyout clause. His standout performances against Sporting while at Estoril caught the attention of their scouting team. After playing for Sporting’s under-23 team, Nunes received his first call-up to the first team from manager Rúben Amorim on June 4, 2020, coming on as a substitute in a 2–2 draw against Vitória de Guimarães.

He extended his contract in October 2020, which increased his buyout clause to €60 million, and Sporting paid Estoril €450,000 for the remaining economic rights. Nunes scored his first goal in the Primeira Liga on January 2, 2021, in a 2–0 victory against Braga. He netted his second goal on February 1, 2021, in injury time, securing a 1–0 win over Benfica in the Derby de Lisboa, where he was named man of the match. Following the departure of João Mário, he secured a regular starting position and made an impressive UEFA Champions League debut on September 15, 2021, providing an assist in a 5–1 loss to Ajax. Nunes was instrumental in Sporting’s run of six consecutive league wins, including another Derby de Lisboa triumph against Benfica, and he was named Midfielder of the Month for October and November. Pep Guardiola praised him as “one of the best players in the world” after Nunes’s notable performance during the Champions League round of 16, despite Sporting’s heavy loss to Manchester City on February 15, 2022.
