Horan was born on May 26, 1994, in Golden, Colorado, near Denver. While she attended Golden High School, she did not play soccer there, opting instead to play club soccer with Colorado Rush. She began playing for the Colorado Edge during U-11 tryouts. At 15 years old, she joined the U.S. U-17 women’s national team, where she scored 12 goals in nine games leading up to the North American/Central American/Caribbean U-17 tournament in Costa Rica. During her sophomore year, she earned a spot on the Parade Magazine High School All-American team, despite not playing high school soccer.
In 2012, ESPN ranked Horan as the top college soccer prospect. She had committed to play for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels starting in the 2012 season but chose instead to bypass college and sign with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in France.
