Jones was born on September 7, 1967, in Memphis, Tennessee. She had a younger brother, Rodney Keith Jones (1971–2009). Her father served in the U.S. Army, and the family moved frequently before settling in Los Angeles, where he worked as an electronics engineer at Stevie Wonder’s radio station, KJLH. Jones attended high school in Lynwood, California, where she played basketball, a sport her father encouraged her to pursue due to her height.
She earned a basketball scholarship to Chapman University, where she initially struggled to choose a major. While there, she worked as a DJ at the student radio station, KNAB, and considered playing basketball professionally overseas. In 1986, when her coach Brian Berger accepted a position at Colorado State University, Jones transferred there. She explored several majors—including pre-law, accounting, and computer science—before ultimately settling on communications.
