Early life
Lenny Kravitz was born on May 26, 1964, in New York City, as the only child of Sy Kravitz, a television news producer for NBC, and actress Roxie Roker. His mother came from a Christian background and was of African-American and Bahamian descent, while his paternal grandfather was of Russian-Jewish heritage. Through his mother’s side, Kravitz is a second cousin to television weather anchor Al Roker—their grandfathers were brothers. He was named after his uncle, Leonard M. Kravitz, a U.S. Army private first class who died heroically in the Korean War at age 20.
Leonard was killed in action while single-handedly defending his unit from a Chinese assault, allowing most of his platoon to escape. Though he was not raised in a religious household, Kravitz had a spiritual awakening at the age of 13 and began attending church. He later identified as a non-denominational Christian. During his childhood, Kravitz spent weekdays living on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, attending P.S. 6 elementary school, and weekends at his grandmother Bessie’s home in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn.
