He has also had a wide range of roles in other television productions.

From the age of one, Kevin Whately lived in Humshaugh near Chollerford in Northumberland. While in school, he participated in school plays, and when he expressed an interest in acting, his teacher told him, “You’ll never make a proper living.” As a result, he initially joined a Newcastle-based accounting firm. However, Whately eventually moved to London to attend drama school. Struggling to make ends meet, he would busk early in the mornings at Oxford Street tube station and work as a ticket taker at The Old Vic Theatre in the evenings. Later, he relocated to Perth, Scotland, where he spent a season performing in repertory theatre. In 1980, Whately met his wife while they were both performing in the production A Nightingale in Berkeley Square. After that, he transitioned into television.

Early Life
Whately was born in Brampton, near Carlisle, Cumberland, before his family moved to North Tynemouth when he was four. His mother, Mary (née Pickering), was a teacher, and his father, Richard, served as a Commander in the Royal Navy. Whately’s maternal grandmother, Doris Phillips, was a professional concert singer, while his paternal grandfather, Herbert Whately, was the Archdeacon of Ludlow. Additionally, his great-great-grandfather, Richard Whately, was the Anglican Archbishop of Dublin. In a 2009 episode of the BBC documentary Who Do You Think You Are?, it was revealed that Whately is a descendant of Thomas Whately, a prominent London merchant and Bank of England director, as well as Major Robert Thompson, a Parliamentarian and tobacco plantation owner in Virginia during the English Commonwealth.
