Development
Director Nag Ashwin announced in August 2019 that he had been developing an original story and screenplay since the release of the 2018 biographical film Mahanati. Vyjayanthi Movies disclosed their intention to commence production on Ashwin’s project in September of the same year, calling for visual artists, designers, and writers to participate. Vyjayanthi Movies confirmed in February 2020 that their upcoming film with Ashwin would feature Prabhas, commemorating the 50th anniversary of their studio. The movie is being produced by C. Aswani Dutt, Ashwin’s father-in-law.

Production
The movie, initially known as “Project K,” required advanced technology and futuristic vehicles. Despite the option of using CGI, Ashwin preferred to construct the vehicles from scratch with a team of engineers to ensure authenticity. In March 2022, Ashwin approached businessman Anand Mahindra for technical assistance in building these vehicles. Shortly after, Mahindra confirmed that Mahindra & Mahindra would support the production team from their research facility in Chennai. By July 2021, a futuristic set had been built at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad for filming a significant portion of the movie.
In August 2020, A. R. Rahman was first approached to compose music for the film. However, Rahman did not sign on, and Ashwin brought in technicians from his previous film Mahanati (2018), including composer Mickey J. Meyer and cinematographer Dani Sanchez-Lopez. Subsequently, Serbian cinematographer Djordje Stojiljkovic took over from Dani Sanchez-Lopez as the film’s official cinematographer. In February 2023, Dutt mentioned in an interview that Santhosh Narayanan replaced Meyer as the composer, and a female Bollywood composer was also enlisted to create a song for the film. Singeetam Srinivasa Rao was added to the project as a mentor. Kalki 2898 AD was projected to have a budget of ₹600 crore (US$75 million), positioning it as the most costly Indian film to date.
Filming Planing
The film’s original plan was to start filming in November 2020 but was delayed to the following year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Principal photography began in Hyderabad in July 2021 on Guru Purnima with a muhurtam shot featuring Bachchan. Prabhas and Padukone joined in December 2021, and scenes with all three actors were filmed. The second phase of filming occurred in February 2022. Instead of shooting continuously, the team split the 80–90 days of filming into 7–8 days per month to allow time for preparing equipment and props. This approach extended the production timeline. The film was shot using a DIY Arri Alexa 65 camera, making it the first Indian film to utilize this technology.
Prabhas More Upcoming Projects
Prabhas was slated to commence filming his individual scenes in April 2022, but a knee surgery caused a setback in his upcoming projects like Salaar and Kalki 2898 AD. Most of the shooting took place on sets at Ramoji Film City, with Bachchan filming a scene at Raidurg metro station in June. In July, Padukone and Prabhas filmed a car chase sequence in Hyderabad. Prabhas wrapped up the majority of his scenes by the end of this period.
Principal Photography
Principal photography was initially scheduled to conclude by January 2023, with around 8 months allocated for post-production and visual effects. However, filming was prolonged until March 2023 due to Bachchan’s rib injury, necessitating his recovery in Mumbai. By June 2023, roughly 70% of the filming had been completed. In March 2025, a romantic scene featuring Prabhas and Disha Patani was filmed in Italy.
