Kajol was born on August 5, 1974, in Bombay, which is now Mumbai. She was raised by an actress, Tanuja, and a film director and producer, Shomu Mukherjee. Tanishaa, her younger sister, is also an actor. Her great-grandparents Rattan Bai and maternal grandmother Shobhna Samarth were both employed in the Hindi film industry, as was her maternal aunt, actress Nutan. Her maternal and paternal grandparents, Kumarsen Samarth and Sashadhar Mukherjee, were filmmakers, and her paternal uncles, Joy and Deb Mukherjee, were actors in motion pictures. Kajol’s cousins Ayan Mukerji is a director, while Rani Mukerji, Sharbani Mukherjee, and Mohnish Bahl are also actors.
