High School Career
In the summer of 2017, Jones participated in the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders Americas camp in Nassau. That same year, he trained with top high school recruit Deandre Ayton, which motivated him to pursue basketball in the U.S. For the 2017–18 season, he enrolled at Orlando Christian Prep in Florida as a senior, where he played alongside five-star recruits Nassir Little and C. J. Walker, helping the team win the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 3A state championship. During high school, Jones maintained a rigorous training schedule, waking up at 4:45 a.m. daily for workouts and playing basketball after school. He also excelled academically, graduating with a 4.2 GPA and summa cum laude honors.
Coach Shaka Smart praised Kai Jones for having the best work ethic among the big men he coached. However, Jones initially found it challenging to secure playing time during his freshman season. As the season progressed, he began to play more, notably scoring eight points on 4-of-5 shooting in just 10 minutes during the Longhorns’ 73–71 victory over McNeese State on November 30. By the end of his freshman year, he averaged 3.6 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. In his sophomore season, he improved his averages to 8.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. He declared for the 2021 NBA Draft on March 24, 2021.

However, on September 30, 2023, the Hornets announced that Jones would not participate in training camp, providing no timeline for his return. This decision followed a series of unusual social media posts from Jones, which included criticism of his teammates and erratic statements about being the greatest basketball player of all time. On October 9, 2023, Jones publicly requested a trade on X, and just two days later, he was waived by the Hornets. With no team claiming his waiver, he became a free agent. During his two seasons with the Hornets, he averaged 2.7 points in 9.1 minutes per game.
