Her brother, Derek Hough, is also a professional dancer, and she has three older sisters. All of Hough’s grandparents were dancers, and she is a second cousin to musicians Riker, Rydel, Rocky, and Ross Lynch from the band R5.
Her formal dance training began at the Center Stage Performing Arts Studio in Orem, where she danced with Josh Murillo and others in Latin Ballroom. She began competing in dance at the age of nine. When she was 10, her parents, who were divorcing, sent Julianne and her brother Derek to London to study with coaches Corky and Shirley Ballas. There, they trained alongside the Ballas family’s son, Mark. At the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, Julianne and Derek received instruction in dance, song, theatre, and gymnastics. At the age of 12, she formed a pop music trio called 2B1G with her brother and another friend, performing at dance competitions in the UK and the U.S., and appearing on a UK television show. At 15, Julianne became the youngest and only American dancer to win both the Junior World Latin Champion and the International Latin Youth Champion titles at the Blackpool Dance Festival.
