Josh Allen Early Life
Allen grew up on a 3,000-acre cotton farm near Firebaugh, California, a small town located about 40 miles west of Fresno. His family has lived in the area for generations, with his great-grandfather having settled there during the Great Depression after emigrating from Sweden in 1907. His paternal grandfather established the farm in 1975 and was also a longtime member of the local school board, with the Firebaugh High School gymnasium being named in his honor. Allen graduated from Firebaugh High School in 2014.
As a child, Allen was a Fresno State fan and attended both games and football camps in hopes of drawing the interest of the program’s coaching staff. Despite his efforts, Fresno State’s head coach at the time, Tim DeRuyter, did not offer him a scholarship, and Allen received no Division I scholarship offers. He was given a walk-on opportunity by San Diego State, but he declined because Coach Rocky Long could not promise him playing time. In a 2017 article, ESPN speculated on why Allen received so little attention from colleges despite his talent.
