In 2015, his junior season, he played in 8 games, totaling 397 receiving yards and four touchdowns. During his senior year in 2016, he played 11 games, finishing with 506 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Smith received an invitation to the 2017 Senior Bowl, although he was overshadowed by other tight ends projected to be first- or second-round draft picks.

Smith grew up in North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as the youngest of six children to parents Wayne and Karen Smith. Upon his birth, hospital policies pressured his mother to name him quickly, and after praying, she decided on the name Jonnu. He started playing Pop Warner football at age five.

Smith faced many challenges growing up in Philadelphia, including his brother’s arrest and the tragic death of a close friend. Due to safety concerns and limited financial resources, he moved in with his maternal aunt and uncle in Ocala, Florida. There, he began playing high school football at West Port High School. Though he wasn’t highly recruited, he earned a scholarship to Florida International University.
